Ten possible mistakes in avalanche rescue

5th possible mistake

Wrong:
Notifying the emergency doctor only after the victim has been dug out.

Right:
Call the emergency doctor immediately
after locating the buried victim.

Often the emergency doctor is called only after the buried victim has been successfully dug out. Ideally, the emergency doctor should be present during the extrication, in order to determine if an air pocket is present and if the airway is clear. On the basis of these findings, if the victim is in cardiac arrest, the doctor can decide whether to proceed with or to discontinue resuscitation.
